Nampa agencies issue guidance on yielding to emergency vehicles

See the Lights, Pull to the Right: Nampa agencies issue driver guidance

Nampa, Idaho — Officials with the City of Nampa and several emergency and law enforcement agencies issued guidance for how motorists should respond when emergency vehicles are approaching with lights and sirens.

What to do

  • Pull to the right and stop when you see or hear emergency lights and sirens.
  • Stay alert — look ahead and listen for sirens, especially at intersections.
  • Clear intersections — if you’re already in one, continue through and then pull over. Use your signal to indicate your intentions to other drivers and emergency crews. Stay put until the emergency vehicle has passed completely.

What not to do

  • Don’t stop in the middle of the road — this blocks emergency access.
  • Don’t pull to the left or try to outrun the emergency vehicle.
  • Don’t follow closely behind emergency vehicles — they may stop suddenly. Don’t block driveways or intersections when pulling over.
  • Don’t panic — stay calm and move safely out of the way.

Participating agencies include the City of Nampa, Idaho—Municipal Government; Caldwell Fire Department; Nampa Police Department; Caldwell Police Department; Canyon County Sheriff's Office; Canyon County Paramedics; Meridian Fire Department; and Meridian Police Department.
